New in NotebookLM: Customizing your Audio Overviews and introducing NotebookLM Business

NotebookLM is a tool for understanding, built with Gemini 1.5. When you upload your sources, it instantly becomes an expert, grounding its responses in your material and giving you powerful ways to transform information. And since it’s your notebook, your personal data is never used to train NotebookLM.

Millions of people are already using NotebookLM to understand and engage with complex information, and today we’re removing the product’s “Experimental” label and releasing another round of features.

Get more out of your Audio Overviews

We’ve been delighted with the reception of Audio Overviews so far, and we’re introducing a pair of new features today:

  • Guide the conversation: Now you can provide instructions before you generate a "Deep Dive" Audio Overview. For example, you can focus on specific topics or adjust the expertise level to suit your audience. Think of it like slipping the AI hosts a quick note right before they go on the air, which will change how they cover your material.
  • Background listening: You can also listen to Audio Overviews while continuing to work within NotebookLM. Query your sources, get citations, and explore relevant quotes without interrupting the audio.

By tapping “Customize,” you can now guide NotebookLM's Audio Overview, adjusting what the AI hosts focus on and their expertise level.

To try it out, follow these steps:

  1. Go to NotebookLM
  2. Create a new notebook
  3. Add at least one source
  4. In your NotebookLM guide, tap "Generate" for an automatic Audio Overview or "Customize" to provide instructions for the AI hosts

Like always, Audio Overviews are generated discussions and are not a comprehensive or objective view of a topic, but simply a reflection of the sources that you’ve uploaded and any instructions you provide.

Introducing NotebookLM Business

We’re announcing NotebookLM Business, an upcoming version that will be offered via Google Workspace with enhanced features for businesses, universities and organizations. From the start, NotebookLM has made data privacy and security a top priority, and we’ll continue to do that.

Starting today, you can apply for the NotebookLM Business pilot program to get early access to new product features, training and email support. In the meantime, you can continue to use the free version of NotebookLM, and we’ll share more about the general availability and pricing of NotebookLM Business later this year.

With over 80,000 organizations already using NotebookLM, we look forward to welcoming even more.
