4 experiments with voice AI models to help you explore culture

Google Arts & Culture Lab artists in residence continue to showcase how technology can help us connect with cultural topics in experimental ways. This time around, Lab artists Christine and Gaël have experimented with Google AI voice models to make exploring cultural sites and topics more interactive. Here are four playful yet educational experimentations they’ve created to help you learn about art and design; put your doodling skills to the test; and more.

Talking Tours by Google Arts & Culture

Talking Tours

With Talking Tours, you can virtually explore various cultural locations from all around the world while listening to context from a live audio guide generated by Google AI. Whether you’re taking a trip through the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu or the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, you can gather insight to inspire further exploration. For this first experimentation, our Lab artist has worked with a small selection of partners and cultural sites, with more to be added in the future.

Mice in a Museum by Google Arts & Culture

Mice in the Museum

Listen in as August and Pearl, two curious mice, guide you through art in over 100 museums across the world, including the Musée d’Orsay in France and the Ohara Museum of Art In Japan. Generated by Google AI, the mice talk about their observations and invite you to explore artworks — such as Girl at a Window by Rembrandt or Festa escolar no Ipiranga by Agustín Salinas y Teruel — in a new way.

Lip Sync by Google Arts & Culture

Lip Sync

Take a break during your day to listen along as two sets of animated lips have live conversations about cultural topics ranging from arts, crafts to food to travel. Lip Sync offers a fun way to discover new points of view and learn information as the lips respond to over 100 questions curated by our artist in residence, such as, “Where do artists get their ideas?” and “What new types of travel might there be in the future?”

Doodle Guide by Google Arts & Culture

Doodle Guide

Doodle Guide is an experimental tool offering you the chance to test and improve your drawing skills. Get real-time commentary on your doodles from Google AI that combines audio and visual elements: After you draw, Doodle Guide will generate an image based on your drawing and share some tips for artistic improvement.

These early experimental ideas are a first step into looking at how Google AI voice models could help us explore and interact with culture in new ways. They build on many years of research and testing by engineers and creatives at the Google Arts & Culture Lab. You can check out some of their previous experiments, such as Blob Opera and Food Mood, here.
